31 Things – You

Ali’s 6th prompt in her 31 Things class is You. This was a nice easy one to work on, and I really enjoyed it. It was a nice break for the last couple of prompts, which I struggled with a lot more.

Age: 26

Favourite part of my day: Walking in the door after work, seeing  a clean house and my sweet man

Loving: The fact that I’ve been going to the gym regularly for 2 weeks now, feeling stronger, breathing better (apart from the cold I’m getting), eating well, and all round feeling more calm and centred

Longing for: 19th of July, when me and Michael both have a 4 day weekend to celebrate our 3 year anniversary!

Inspired by: Seeing the before and after photos being emailed in the Photo Finish class I’m doing at Big Picture Classes. Can’t wait until I can find some time to make some of my photos look so amazing! Planning decorating and crafty projects to do over the course of the next year is also awesomely inspiring too!

Dreaming of: A weekend of reading the Hunger Games books and crafting. Hoping this weekend is it! Plan to start knitting a blanket and finish up the June prompt for One Little Word.

Needing: To buy shares in Kleenex with the amount of tissues I’m going through this week!

Navigating: Learning a new skill set at work, and taking calls that I’ve never had to deal with before. Wondering how long it will take for things to get easier, especially when we only get about half a dozen calls a day for that skill.

Struggling with: Time management. I used to spend so much more time with Michael, cooking, crafting, writing and online on forums and blogs. Now that I’ve added the gym to the mix, I’m struggling to find balance again. I’m hoping to start making more time at work to get some of the things done off my to do list, so that I can keep fitting the important things in at home (Michael and good food being the highest priorities at the moment)

Knowing: In time, my life will settle down and become more balanced. I’ll be calmer and more centred and better able to make use of my time as my priorities sort themselves out. That in 6 weeks time, I’ll be participating in City 2 Surf, then going on a 2 week ski trip just after, so all the aches and frustration that I’m going through now with a trainer will be well worth it in the end!

The Best: That I get to come home each day to a man I love and who’s crazy about me in return, that we’re looking at buying a place together, and eventually elope and start a family. That I’m working hard fitness-wise, and already seeing results in some areas. The fact that I’m feeling super inspired with so many projects that I want to get started on as soon as I have time

The Worst: The lack of time I seem to have now that I’m at the gym upwards of 6 hours a week. You don’t know how much you end up missing that time until you don’t have it! The constant aching muscles from working out. I am yet to have 1 day since I started at the gym 2 weeks ago where I don’t have at least once muscle aching! I’m well looking forward to stairs not hurting my legs again!

And a random 10 things about me right now:

  1. I want to get married to Michael in Paris or Hawaii. Or somewhere else tropical. A small wedding, with lots of travelling instead. Only the most important family and friends. Lots of pictures. I’m already coming up with ideas for this wedding, and I’m not even engaged yet!
  2. I have now completed 3 runs in the Couch to 5km running program. I have the app, Get Running, on my phone to help me get there. I’m loving the focus it gives me. I almost died after the first 3 out of 8 runs the first day I did it, but now I’m feeling much more confident with it.
  3. I have a renewed love of drinking water lately. I’ve drunk water as my drink of choice for years now, but find it especially good now that I’m working out
  4. I am currently working on quite a few different online classes (One Little Word, 31 Things, More More Eat Well, Photo Finish, Summer Stamp School, and soon, Maggie Holmes photography class). I am loving it! Although I need to spend some good focused time on each. Can’t wait to get the stamp set for Summer Stamp School, as well!
  5. I think I could live off the vegetarian omelette’s Michael has been making lately. He’s getting really good at it! Love the mix of some of my favourite veggies in there, especially mushrooms, shallots and capsicum!
  6. I am super excited now that the messy corner of the lounge now shows floor again. This project has been bugging me for months, and I managed to get it done in about 4 hours. The amount of rubbish we got rid of was amazing!
  7. We don’t have a bed here at the moment. Michael managed to break the frame, so our mattress is on the ground. I want to buy something nice so that it’s no longer on the ground, but Michael wants to make one. This is a debate we’ve been having for about 3 months now… So far, he’s winning, but he still hasn’t started making it yet!
  8. I’m excitedly planning a snow trip to NZ with Michael to learn to ski and snowboard in August. Neither of us have tried either one of these before, so it should be fun! I’m also planning a girls trip with Mum and my sister’s to Thailand in February, as soon as the travel agent stops giving us the run around (I’m not counting on this though, since we’ve been trying to book the Thailand trip since January!)
  9. I still haven’t put my photos and words together in Photoshop for my Week in the Life project this year! Thinking I need to hijack Michael’s computer for a few hours one day soon so I can really focus on getting it done. I know it won’t take too long once I start, since I have all the photos and words done already and just need to get it all in basic templates.
  10. I have stayed up way to late doing this, and now have decided I need  to sleep, since I’ve been up way to late already!

31 Things – Conversation

Prompt 5 in Ali’s 31 Things class is about conversation. When I first thought about this topic, I didn’t initially have a lot of thoughts in relation to it. I sat with it for awhile though, and managed to come up with quite a few ideas about it, which really surprised me!

On any particular day, I speak to a lot of people for work, but not so many on a more personal level. There is only one person that I’m guaranteed to talk to each and every day, and that is Michael. It helps that I live with him, but even if he’s away for work, or I’m away visiting family, we still talk via text and phone calls. Even when we’re at work, we usually send quite a few emails back and forth between us throughout the day. Usually the emails are forwards or funny pictures or quotes to make us laugh, but if we’re making plans for something, it’s often best to do it via email so that we have dates and everything back home to put on the white board so we don’t forget things. One of the most important things I say each day is telling Michael how much he means to me and how much I love him.

I tend to talk to Rebecca pretty regularly too. We text and email a lot to make plans for things, share recipes, ask questions, motivate each other for things like eating well or training, and to bounce ideas off each other. When bored at work we tend to email even more to fill in time. Bec is the one most likely to send me forwards, and is the only person in my family that actually sends emails to me at work. Usually we speak on the phone once or twice a week as well, although sometimes more when we’re planning something. When we get together in person, we can chat for hours as well.

Samantha isn’t as big at chatting to her big sister. She doesn’t call or text as much, and it can sometimes be a week or 2 before I hear from her. Usually our calls are pretty brief asking questions and getting help with things, or are a few text messages back and forth. When we chat in person though, we manage to talk a lot more. Usually this is late at night as one of us is heading in or out at Mum’s, and it usually involves one of us making cups of tea.

Mum and I tend to communicate mostly through phone calls, but occasionally through Facebook messages as well. She’s the only other person in the family that uses Facebook as much as I do still. We usually talk at least once a week, about whatever strikes our fancy, to check in with what’s new, and give updates about the goings on. We also have some good conversations when I’m visiting as well, since it’s so much nicer to sit and talk in person.

Dad’s not that big a communicator, either. When we see each other in person, we tend to chat a lot, usually for a few hours at a time, but when it comes to technology, he can’t really text or email, and doesn’t like talking on the phone that much either. We usually talk every 2 weeks or so, when I realise it’s been awhile and call to see what’s new.

Apart from talking to family on the phone, I tend not to really make calls to people very often, or even answer them. Since I work in a call centre and I’m on the phone all day 5 days a week, it’s nice to have a break when I get home. I still use my phone a lot though. Being an iPhone, it’s nice to have the internet at my fingertips, along with being able to text, take photos and use whatever apps appeal to me at the time. It a nice change to most of my previous phones, that never really had apps or internet on them, that’s for sure!

At work, it’s great to be able to sit down and chat to people face-to-face, although sometimes it can be hard when calls keep coming through, and a conversation can take awhile. Lunch breaks are good now that we’re such a big team, since it means that there is usually always someone else on lunch at the same time to get to have a proper conversation. We’ve recently had communicator put on the work computers, which is similar to MSN messenger, and it is great to be able to chat to other people in the team, even if they sit across the room. It makes it much easier to ask questions as well, which is always good too! I’ve gone for coffee and dinner with some of the girls there too, which is nice since it gives us a chance to have proper conversations without calls coming in constantly! Since we’re a helpdesk team, we only really have calls from other staff, most of who are in a rush to get off the phone, so there isn’t much conversation there, but there are a few regulars who call up who will always say hi and see what’s up, not that I’ll ever meet these people in person. Working on the phones all day does have a tendency to turn a person off phone calls though!

I find Facebook is a great way to stay in touch with people as well, especially the friends and family I don’t get to see often as they live too far away. Private messages are great, but it’s also nice to be able to keep up with what they are doing via status updates and photos. Another benefit is I have everyone’s birthdays on hand as well, which makes it much easier to remember sometimes! I do find that birthday’s tend to be a bit more impersonal with facebook though, since so many people send generic messages, so I tend to text a person instead for a more personal touch. Texting is another great way to keep in touch!

As can probably be told by how much I write, I tend to be a talker. I can pretty much always come up with something to say and have been known to talk for hours. Mum and Nan used to always joke that I could talk underwater, and have always teased me that I never used to shut up! I don’t mind too much though, because I know it’s true, and I know it came from them, since they both used to be the same! I do try to be a good listener too, and will be there for anyone who needs someone to talk to for whatever reason. I have a lot of people open up to me, because they know if they tell me something in confidence, I won’t ever tell anyone. I apparently used to be quite good at giving advice too, since everyone used to come to me when they needed it, although I try not to give advice as much anymore, since I don’t always like people giving it to me.

It’s actually weird that I’m such a talker though, since I’m actually rather shy. I always have been, and I think talking is my way of hiding it a bit. I’ve always been a bit of an introvert though, although since high school, I have come out of my shell a lot more. Running poker tournaments for a living, and working in a club tend to help with that a lot! I used to have to use the microphone on a regular basic, and was basically paid to chat to people and be social, which is always helpful to someone not so good at those things. My confidence grew greatly at that point in time! I hate public speaking. I guess that makes sense for the shy, introverted side of me, but I’m actually rather good at it when I try. I used to speak really fast and with jumble words, but if try to slow it down, I can speak from just bullet points rather than reading, which is always a good skill to have. This especially came in handy for uni presentations, where I had to speak in front of rooms of people!

I tend to enjoy blogs a lot and have done for years now. I read quite a few, and lately, I have taken to responding to posts more often and contributing to the conversations. It’s nice to get to communicate that way, on topics that I find interesting, since I don’t know many real life crafters. When I find their posts and ideas inspiring, I like to let the person know, and if they communicate back, even better! I used to go on some forums like Scrapfreak a lot, but to be honest, I don’t often spend the time to really communicate on them much anymore. It’s a little sad, since they’re often quite good discussions, with the chance to make some good friendships, but it’s much more time intensive. I do tend to read a lot of posts on there still though. The discussion board I’m most active on is the Big Picture Classes one. I quite enjoy going on there and browsing for inspiration on projects that I’m working on and feeling inspired by. I think the sense of community that you get online is one of the reasons that I like blogging so much!

I tend to have a lot of self-talk going on in my head as well. Constant to do lists, ideas, inspiration, thoughts… The list goes on! This can be helpful sometimes, when I’m brainstorming or trying to remember things, but I find it can also be quite annoying at times as well. I find my brain tends to end up most active at night, when I need to be sleeping, and there have been many occasions where I’ve ended up having trouble sleeping due to my mind working a mile a minute. Sometimes when this happens, I’ve been known to get up, go to the craft room and just write to get it all down and clear my head. Sometimes this works, but sometimes when I lie back down, I have a million more ideas, which can be frustrating! There has been times where I’ve gotten up 3 times to do this and still had trouble sleeping! I’m a big list maker though, and love writing things down so that I can get them out of my brain, and don’t have to worry about forgetting them. Writing does tend to help organise my thoughts though, and clear out some of the constant chatter going on in there!

31 Things – Spirit

Prompt 4 in Ali’s 31 Things class is about spirit. I actually struggled with this prompt quite a lot, since I’m not really religious. A lot of my thoughts on this subject are pretty personal, so I’ve decided just to share 2 of the stories from growing up. I don’t really have any photos this week though. As challenging as this was, I still liked the prompt since it forced me to really think.

When I was little, me, Bec and Samantha used to go to Sunday School. Our family isn’t hugely religious, but our Uncle Lloyd used to go there, so we went with him. There was a family that lived near us, the Millers, who used to pick us up each week and drive us out there, since they had a big car that could fit us, along with their 3 kids. The church we went to had a train carriage out the front, where we used to do Sunday School sometimes, although usually it was in a room out the back of the church. I used to always love the days we were in the train carriage though. When they remodelled the church a few years ago, they actually took away train, which was rather sad. I don’t remember a lot about the Sunday school itself, but I used to enjoy going, because it was always fun seeing the Millers, and they became quite good friends. I even worked with one of their girls who was my age when I got my first job. One of my favourite things about going to church each week that we did was to walk to the shops near the church afterwards to get $5 hot chips, which we then shared on the car ride home. It was a really nice tradition that we had.

As weird as this may be, I actually believe in spirits. There was one night when I was about 17, where I was driving home with my ex after a night out at a friends. We were driving along next to a train track, and I heard screeching brakes, screaming and a loud crash that sounded like a train hitting something. I freaked out about hearing a train crash and told my ex that we need to pull over and call the cops, and he thought I was crazy since he hadn’t heard anything at all. It made no sense to me why he didn’t hear anything, since I could hear everything in so much detail! I told some friends about it, one of which was a train driver, and he looked into it, and it turns out that years and years ago, there was actually a train crash on that train line in the same spot that we had driven past. I’ve always thought it was creepy to have heard a ghost train crash so far into the future from when it happened, but I’m certain that was what I heard that night. Another time, we were driving along a deserted street and I saw a young girl walking along the street alone in a white dress, and I told my ex that he should stop to offer help since it was so late at night. Again, he thought I was crazy since he didn’t see anyone. I’ve woken up once and seen a girl with long dark hair leaning over me as I slept as well. I know that is should be creepy, but when I woke up and saw her, I felt quite peaceful. I’ve always thought of her as my guardian angel looking over me. She’s actually popped up a few times over the years, although not for a while now. I kind of shied away from anything spirit related at about 19 or 20 after the train crash incident, since it freaked me out so much

I know all these things probably make me  sound crazy, but I’m not the only person I know that has seen spirits in this way. One girl I know used to see and communicate to spirits regularly, and as a teen, I’d tried seances on the prompting of other friends as well, although these always ended up being rather scary, especially the night me and a friend tried one at home. We came out to tell Mum about it, since the spirit said something about kill and we were rather freaked out. I heard the front door close, and didn’t think anything of it, and Mum told us to go in and pack up, so we did. Just as we walked into the room, there was a bang at the window and we both screamed and ran out. As soon as I hit the door though, I realised that Dad had snuck out the front to come around and scare us! He walked back into the house laughing like crazy at us, which I don’t blame him for! Even we found it rather funny. He actually got away with doing the same thing to Bec a few years later as well.

31 Things – Read

Prompt 3 in Ali’s 31 Things class is about reading. I was again surprised at how much I wrote about it! Instead of taking new pictures this time, I’ve used some old ones again, but will probably add in some newer ones over the weekend. I’m still really enjoying recording these aspects of my life in such detail though!

I love to read! Always have, always will. Never at any point in my life have I struggled with delving into a good book! I used to read much more when I was a kid than I do now, but I still love it all the same. I read to relax and to learn mostly, and enjoy every moment of it usually. There is something about getting lost in a good book that is so enticing. It’s like entering a whole other world. You can tell when I most enjoy a book, because I can’t put it down, and will stay up most of the night reading it. It usually means that I finish a book in a couple of days.

Even when I was little I was a strong reader. I used to read above my age group, and when I was about 8, I read a book called the 9 Days Queen (which I still have today!) that is aimed at 15 year olds. I loved that book! I’ve probably read it about a dozen times over the years!

One of my favourite things about primary school was the Scholastic book club. They used to send out mini catalogues with lots of books listed, for us kids to take home, choose what we wanted and take back to school to make the order. The books would then be delivered a couple of weeks later. I always loved pouring over these catalogues and trying to work out the best books that I could buy, the ones that would be the most intriguing or the best value. I think Mum liked the fact that I read so much, because she never seemed to have too much of a problem with letting me get one most times!

I completed the MS Readathon a couple of times, which was a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis. I didn’t really know much about the issue, and still don’t, but I didn’t mind raising money for it, because I was doing something I enjoyed so much and would be doing anyway, so I figured why not raise some money to help others out. I loved trying to read as many books as I could to try and raise as much money as possible. This was back when I was starting out reading chapter books, and it was not unusual for me to read around the 50 book mark, which isn’t bad really. The way the sponsorship worked is that people sponsored you for how many books you read.

Growing up, I used to stay up way past my bed time reading most nights. Mum used to come in and tell me it was bed time and to turn off the lights, and I’d tell her I would at the end of the chapter, but would then read for quite awhile longer until she came back in or I got tired. Even now when I read, I stay up way past my bed time when I’m reading a good book. I find they always sucker me in and I want to keep reading. It’s like being in a whole other world!

When Samantha was little, I used to read to her most nights. I’ve never been the greatest at reading out loud, but I used to enjoy it. We would sit on her bottom bunk bed, where it was way too dark to read properly, and I’d go through lots of different books. Sometimes Bec would join in too. I miss that… We used to be so close! When Bec was in Kindy, one of her reading books was called Each Peach Pear Plum, and I read this to them. To this day, I can still recite it word for word… Not bad when that was about 20 years ago!

Towards the end of primary school, I even managed to go to 2 different book signings. At one, I met the author Margaret Clarke, who signed a copy of her book, Fat Chance, for me. I also met the illustrator of the Tashi books, Kim Gamble. He came to my primary school at one stage too, and I remember watching him draw a picture of Tashi in pastels on black board, which was framed in the school library right up until after I left. My love of bright colours on black grew from there!

I was in love with books enough that I was even library monitor for the last 2 years of primary school. It was basically one of my jobs to help put books away, to check books out for people, and to help keep the place in order. I also spent a fair bit of time in the library in high school, although they don’t have as many interesting books in a high school library. I spent a lot more time on the computers there.

Some of my favourite books as a kid were Goosebumps and the Babysitters Club books. I read and reread them a lot. I even owned the entire first series of the Goosebumps books, which I think Mum might still have at her place. I was so in love with that collection, although I was rather disappointed that there were about 8 or so books that were too big for one bookshelf shelf! Even now, I still like my books to look super neat on the shelf, all matching sizes and grouped together in order for the series! I also like all the books in series to match. It drives me crazy when they have different covers, like my Eragon book! I’m missing one book from the True Blood series, and haven’t started reading any because of it, since I can’t find a matching one with red writing on the spine anywhere so far!

I like having my books covered before I read them, so they don’t get damaged. I can’t stand when people fold down pages and crack the spines of books either, whether they are my books or someone else’s. I really do not like people damaging them at all and find it rather sad. Often I can be too lazy to cover books through, and that puts me off starting to read sometimes. I’m having this problem with the Hunger Games books at the moment, so I’m determined to do it this weekend so I can start reading them.

These days, I find the most enjoyable books to be young adult ones. Some favourite ones include Harry Potter, Twilight, Eragon, Melissa Marr’s books, and all of the Dan Brown books. I think these authors are extremely talented and creative. This is especially true for the writer of the Eragon books, Christopher Paolini, who was only like 16 when he wrote the first one, which then turned in to 4 books. I also love travel books, especially the Lonely Planet guides, and buy them for each place I visit. My next one to buy is the Thailand one.

One of my goals for this year is to read at least one book every month for the year, so a minimum of 12 books throughout. So far this year, I’ve read all 4 Eragon books, Crafternoon, Between and a book with 2 short stories called Dark Lies, and it’s only the start of June. I plan on reading the 3 Hunger Games books, and the Tomorrow series as well, along with my NZ Lonely Planets Guide, and I’m hoping to get my hands on a copy of Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Management, as well. I’m yet to decide what other books to read though, but I think I’ll exceed the 12 books this year, which is more than I’ve done in some recent years.

I love buying new books. I once went to a Big W book sale and spent $200 laybying books, and haven’t even read a lot of them. They seems like a good idea at the time though! Now when I choose books, I’m more picky. I tend to get most of them from Kmart as impulse buys. I look through the shelves at the store and find books that catch my eye. I’m drawn to interesting covers firstly, but I’ll usually read the back to see how it sounds, then choose the most interesting sounding one. I try to only buy one or 2 at a time as well, although if it’s a series, then I’ll buy all of them at once, like I did with Hunger Games. On a random note, I only paid $10 each for my Hunger Games books, which made me happy. I’ve spent way more on books in the past!

Lately, I’ve taken to buying the books from Book Depository instead of from bookshops. It’s cheaper for me to buy them there and have them sent to me in Australia than to buy from most places in Australia. They offer free shipping worldwide too. I usually have to wait 2-3 weeks longer, but it seems to be worth it so far. My last order was 4 Lonely Planets guides that cost me about $80 in total from there, but would have been around $130 in Australia, which is a huge saving!

To help free up some bookshelf space, I’ve taken to passing on books to Mum and the girls that I have no intention of rereading again It gives them something new to read, and gives me room for more books! I think I need to upgrade my bookshelf though, since it’s still getting too small… I’ve already moved out all of my craft books to the craft room, and cook books to another bookshelf in the loungeroom!

Michael’s not a huge reader at all, but so far this year he’s read Between, the 3 Hunger Games books over Easter long weekend, and he’s on to the 4th Eragon book as of this evening as well. I’m quite impressed that he’s taken to it so well. He actually has some similar tastes to me, which works well for him, since I have so many other books he can read!

There is something about real books that is so much more intriguing to me than reading them on an ereader. I’m not sure why that is though. I guess it must be the texture and smell of the real books? I am contemplating getting an ereader though, since I can fill it with books, which are usually way cheaper than real books, and it takes up way less space. This sounds especially helpful for while I’m travelling. I’m not sure how I’d like it though. Maybe just getting a small tablet PC will be enough for me though, since I’m looking at getting one anyway. I don’t like reading books on the computer much though, I find it much harder to be drawn in to the story. I sometimes use the kindle app on my iPhone, but Michael hates when I do that, and keeps telling me how bad it is for my eyes, but they’re already bad anyway.

I download a lot of ebooks. I tend not to read all the many though. I have taken them to work to read a few times, which works well enough, but it can get distracting with calls coming in all the time. I tend to spend more time at work reading blogs and writing diary entries or blog posts, so I can come home at night and not have to think about them.

I sometimes read magazines, especially when it’s quiet at work. I used to read them a lot when I was a teen, starting out with Dolly and Girlfriend, then moving on to Cleo and Cosmopolitan. I used to keep most of them and had A LOT, but not so much now. I tend to buy them and not read all the way through, so I don’t buy them very often at all. At work, there is usually a stash to read, since everyone brings them in, although they’re usually the gossip magazines, which I don’t find all that interesting.

I really enjoy reading the Body and Soul section from the Sunday Telegraph too. I used to steal this from Mum’s paper when she brought it and read it before she could, and she hated me pulling the paper apart to get to it! I don’t buy the paper, but when we take Michael’s work car to the car wash, I tend to pull it out and read it, and I’m loving that tradition!

I have a lot of cookbooks. I don’t tend to use them that often, and really should either start using them more, or pass them on. When I look through them,  I tend to see lots of recipes that look amazing, but to be honest, half of them are too complicated to make on a regular basic, and I prefer cooking good staple meals that are quick and easy to make, rather than fussy.

Where I read tends to change pretty regularly. Often, I’ll be lounging in bed, on the lounge, or curled up in my computer chair at the table. I tend not to read much when I’m out though, because I get distracted too easily. I love curling up in Mum’s recliner chair to read as well, and can’t wait to get one when we buy a place! I’ve already decided it will live in my craft room, so I may yet end up with 2 so I can have one in the lounge room too!

31 Things – Morning

Prompt 2 in Ali’s 31 Things class is about morning, and morning routine. I was again surprised at how much I wrote about it! Instead of taking new pictures this time, I’ve just reused some from my Week in the Life project from April. I’m still really enjoying these writing prompts, although I’m not even close to caught up. I don’t mind though, because I’d rather write a good amount than rush through each prompt and miss details of my life.

I’m not much of a morning person. I like staying up late at night, so it’s often a struggle to wake up each morning. I never get up on the first alarm, and always manage to hit snooze at least once. Even on days when I wake up naturally, I tend not to get straight up either. It doesn’t help in winter when it’s so cold either!

When it comes to mornings, I’m actually way better than I used to get. For quite awhile, when I was running poker tournaments and working at Wests, I used to sleep right up until midday most days, and then a sleep in was between 2 and 3pm! These days, my version of a sleep in is being up by 10am, although I still will lounge around in bed on the internet on my phone.

Michael is always the first one up. His alarm goes off at 5.45am each morning, and he’s the opposite of me and doesn’t hit snooze. He hops straight up and in the shower. Half the time, I don’t even wake up on his alarm or while he’s getting ready for work. Once he’s showered, he’ll go out and have brekkie while having some relaxing time on the computer, before brushing his teeth and heading out the door. I’m surprised some days that I don’t hear anything at all from him though. Goes to show that I sleep pretty solidly!

On work days, the time I get up tends to vary depending on what shifts I’m doing for the week. The earliest I’m ever usually up is 7am. This gives me time to get up, get ready and walk to work, and make it there with enough time to have a relaxing breakfast on the weeks when I have 8.30am starts.

Up until the last year or so, I’ve never really had any morning routines. I’ve found that I’m finally getting into a decent rhythm during the week lately though, and it seems to be working really well for me. I’d even say that I quite enjoy it! On work days, I start out by waking up on the first alarm, and hitting snooze. On the second alarm, I drag myself up and make the bed straight away most days. I then pick out work clothes so I can get dressed as soon as I hope out of the shower. This is especially helpful on cold mornings, since I don’t have to search a cold room in just a towel for something to wear! I hit the bathroom fan and start the shower heating up while I brush my teeth, and then I jump in once I’m done. After the shower, I dry myself, moisturise and get dressed, then I walk to work. Since I’m always at work early, I eat a relaxing brekkie there, usually of toast or cereal that I’ve brought in, although there is the occasional bacon and egg roll, and I’ll hang around chatting, or browsing online, or whatever else strikes my fancy on any particular day.

Even my shower routine is pretty well set… I use the same products each day, like Palmolive Naturals milk and honey shower gel, Palmolive Natural shampoo and conditioner and Redwin sorbolene cream. I wash my hair every second day, and use a face scrub once or twice a week. When I get out, I moisturise my face, legs and arms to try to prevent my eczema flaring up like it does on occasion when my skin gets dry. Then I’m done for the day. I’m not one who fusses over hair and makeup unless I’m going out, so this saves me quite a bit of time each morning at least!

I’ve realised that I’m pretty organised in the mornings lately as well. I’ve always have water bottles in the fridge ready to go, so once I’m dressed and ready, I head out and grab one for my work bag and grab my container of cereal if that’s what I’m having for breakfast. I tend to get this sort of thing sorted the night before to make the morning more peaceful. I always make sure there are clothes for me to choose from and socks and things ready to go as well, so it’s easy to decide in the morning. I think I would drive myself crazy if I wasn’t organised, especially if I had to attempt to iron work clothes each morning!

I love walking to work each day. I find it so relaxing, and end up getting to work feeling refreshed and happy. I know I shouldn’t be surprised that the fresh air and exercise has that affect, but it always amazes me. No matter how tired I am throughout the rest of the morning routine, it always perks me up when I walk in. Because I enjoy the walk, I even brought some gumboots for the days that it rains, so I can still easily walk in, but also avoid the wet feet and pants that come with walking through puddles! I also love the light in the morning as well. I never noticed it before, but I seem to find it so much more inspiring, and I can often be found taking pictures of gardens, flowers, birds, interesting leaves and much more along the way. It’s one of the best parts of working so close to home! It used to drive me crazy when I was catching the bus or train to Olympic Park each day. I found it so draining, and always got off the bus grumpy and tired. It’s also better than the hour each way I used to drive to work when I was working in Newcastle but living on the Central Coast!

When I’m on late shifts, my routine changes slightly. I wake up later, and will get up and make the bed, then set up the laptop and have brekkie at the computer, before coming in to brush my teeth and have a shower. If I have running around to do, I’ll often do it in the mornings, since I won’t have time to do it after work, things like getting my eyebrows done, or developing photos. I’ll leave home earlier and walk straight to the Westfield, then do what needs going and head straight to work. It makes me much happier than trying to cram it all in to late night shopping!

Since we’re in the process of starting to look for a place to buy, I’ve been thinking about what sort of changes will happen to my morning routine then. I doubt I’ll live this close to where I’m working again, so I think what will happen is I’ll end up getting up earlier and driving to the oval down the street from here to park, then walking the rest of the way in, like so many other people do each day. I think that would make me much happier than if I was to try and bus or train it, or if I was to have to pay huge amounts for parking by trying to get closer to work.

On weekends, I like to have at least one day of sleeping in if possible. I’ll usually wake up at whatever time my body naturally feels like getting up, and I’ll stay snuggled in bed browsing the net on my phone. One of my favourite weekend traditions is Michael making soft boiled eggs for brekkie, which he usually does each weekend. He’ll let me stay in bed reading, and then as they’re ready, he’ll come and tell me to get up and come out, so I put the dressing gown on and head out to eat. I think it’s one of the nicest things he does for me, and I don’t know if he realises how much I enjoy the relaxing start to the day!

It often surprises me that I’m not really a morning person. Both Mum and Dad are early starters, which Dad starting work around 6am each day, but leaving at about 5am to travel to wherever he needs to be for the day, and Mum starting a lot of her shifts at 3 or 4am. Dad’s always done it though, so I guess it’s nothing new for him, although Mum’s only done it for the last 5 or so years. She used to like sleep-ins on the weekends as well, so maybe it’s something I’ll grow out of at a later stage.

One thing I miss from when I was still in High School was that Dad used to wake me up each morning with a nice, hot cup of tea each day before he left, since I had to be up early to make my way to school. I used to have to catch 2 buses to get there, because we moved when I was in year 9 so we were much further away, and I didn’t want to change schools. I think this was about the only time in my life where mornings didn’t bother me at all! I had some terrible habits at this stage though, always having coke and chocolate at school for brekkie! This did change about part way through year 11 though, when I started buying a vegemite muffin and milk each day instead, which was cheaper, and healthier!

Up until the last year or so, I’ve never been a big brekkie eater. I always choose sleep over food, which never bothered me too much, although when the chance came up, I would never refuse a big breakfast! It’s the one meal of the day that I can eat a lot, although I don’t have a big brekkie very often. I find now though, that I can’t go more than an hour or so after waking up without eating, or my stomach starts growling quite a lot and I can’t focus much. It’s weird how it’s become such a habit and necessity for me! I’m not complaining at all though, because I know how much healthier it is for me to eat, and I usually make decent choices that time of the day anyway.

I’ve never been one who’s needed coffee or caffeine to get me started in the morning either. I’ve never been a huge coffee drinker anyway, and have only ever drunk it because I enjoy the taste, rather than needing a pick me up. I drink maybe 2-3 coffees a week, usually only on coffee dates, or when I want to kick back and relax with a warm drink but don’t feel like tea, or if I buy brekkie. It’s not a big deal for me to have it or not, and I actually prefer not to drink it in the morning since I tend to find it rather dehydrating overall. I’m a huge water drinker though, and will pretty much always go through a bottle of water before I even start work!

One interesting fact though, is that no matter how late I stay up, if I need to get up early for something like a flight or a long trip, or an appointment or anything scheduled like that, I wake up on the first alarm and I’m up and ready with no problems. I’ve noticed that on these days, I don’t get grumpy at all, either, which is an amazing fact! I don’t know why, but the days when I’m busy, I can run off no sleep and be ok, but when I sleep more, it’s not always the case.

Sometimes I have dreams too. I don’t remember a lot of dreams, but if I have a dream in the morning just before my alarm, it tends to turn into a half dream, half day dream after the alarm goes off. These are usually really strange happenings, which I start to forget at soon as I get up, but are sometime so random and amusing that I’ll text or call Michael to tell him about them. I like the dreams where I’m a kick ass heroine the best though… I can fight, play guitar and drums and speak multiple languages and so much other cool stuff! These happy day dreams also lead to a good start for the day!

I don’t often eat morning tea either, although if I do, I like having something like a banana, a le snack, or a muesli bar. If I have a late lunch break, I’ll sometimes have a hot Milo to help tide me over before I have a proper meal.

31 Things – Jewellery

This month I’m taking part in Ali Edwards 31 Things class. In this class, there are 31 one word writing prompts that are emailed out each day. I’m a few days behind already due to becoming hooked on Revenge, but I caught up the first prompt today. I was rather surprised at home much I ended up writing! I doubt I’ll write this much for all of the prompts, but I’m happy to have so much down that I can add to at a later date!

I’m planning on posting my take on each one of the writing prompts about once each week, along with any photos I have to go with them.

I’m not a big jewellery person. I don’t go out a lot, so I don’t need to dress up a lot, but I still have quite a bit of the stuff. Some I cherish, others I have little regard for, and I definitely need to purge it all. I guess I take after Mum in the jewellery department (makeup, too), in the fact that neither of us really wears it. She has 3 sets of ear piercings, yet doesn’t wear earrings, and even after being married for over 20 years, she didn’t even wear her wedding ring.

My jewellery wearing started as a kid. Mum took me to get my ears pierced for the first time when I was 3. I don’t really remember it, because it was so long ago. I decided at 11 that I wanted a second set of ear piercings, so I used my birthday money that year to get them done again. I had them pierced with cute little star studs, which are a nightmare to unclip when I need to take them out, being the nail biter that I am. Even though I’ve changed them overtime, I still keep coming back to my little, gold stars, which I’m wearing right now. I had a few problems with the second piercing, mostly the fact that hair tangled around one shortly after getting it done, and ripped through the piercing when I took it out to change it. I can’t complain about it too much compared to my final piercing attempt. At about 16, me, Mum, Bec and Bec’s friend all went and got the top of our ear pierced, where the cartilage is. It didn’t hurt much during the process, but I had infections in the piercing for about 2 years after. I thought about taking it out on so many occasions, but always decide against it. The last few years I’ve thought about getting it done again just above this one as well, although always seem to hold off due to the troubles last time. I don’t take my earrings out much though, and rarely change them over, except when I want to wear some big ones out.

I’m not sure why, but I’ve always had a fascination with piercings. I wanted my eyebrow, tongue and lip done for years, right through high school and awhile after. Even now, I still like the piercings, but knowing that I was likely to work in an office, I always held off getting any facial piercings since they’re so hard to hide. Nose piercings are one that I’ve never liked or wanted though. I don’t even know why, but it’s just never interested me. And dermal piercings are just weird to me… I know a few people that have them done, and I find it a little disturbing.

When I was a kid, I tried my hand at making jewellery. I loved crafty stuff anyway, so it made sense to make some of my own. I made friendship bracelets for years, and still have a lot of them. I loved the colours and patterns, and playing with the string. It was a time consuming process, but oh so peaceful!

I upgraded to making beaded jewellery when the Bead-Azzle shop opened at Tuggerah. They had so many fancy beads, in lots of colours and styles, and they even run jewellery making classes. I went there to make a dream catcher and sun catcher at one stage. Their stuff was super affordable compared to what you get these days, though. I remember you used to get a tub of beads about the size of a film canister, sometimes mixed, sometimes in the one colour, and they were only $3… Now you get half as much, for twice as much! I kept all my beads and jewellery supplies in a kids jewellery box that had a section underneath and a divided section on top. I loved being able to carry it around with everything together, except for Dad’s pliers which I had to raid from his tool box each time.

Mum did ceramics for awhile when I was a teenager, and I went along a few nights when she was there. I’ve never been much of a painter, but painting the ceramics was always fun! I actually made a jewellery box there one time too. It’s blue, with a gold star on the top, and to this day, I still have it, and still use it, although it’s in desperate need of sorting! I’m so glad that I got to make it though, and loved the time spent with Mum doing something we both enjoyed so much.

When it comes to real jewellery, the grown up kind, my preference is silver or white gold. I don’t know why, but I don’t really like the colouring of normal gold, and dislike rose gold even more. I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that I had really tan skin when I was younger, and the silver stood out against it more. It works out well though, since I’m also allergic to gold. It’s a trait that runs through Mum’s side of the family. I used to have a couple of gold bangles as a kid, and necklaces too, but they would give me rashes if I wore them for too long, which would itch like mad and look terrible. For my 18th birthday, Uncle Glenn actually gave me a really nice gold bracelet, that to this day, I’ve only ever wore that night. I suppose he wasn’t to know I’m allergic.

When I was a teenager, I loved cross necklaces. I’m not religious, but there was something I found mesmerising about them, and I still have a few of them. I had one that I wore for years, but all the stones started falling out of it, so it’s since retired to the back of the jewellery box. The girls actually brought me another one a few years back that I still have out and wear on occasion as well. I really like it.

I always wanted a locket as well. I never had one when I was little, and always thought they were amazing and special. The first locket I ever got was actually a present from my ex, although I picked it out. He promised for years while we were together that he was going to get pictures for it, but it never ended up happening. I still have the locket, but I haven’t worn it since long before we split up. It still has some significance to me, but due to the breakup being so messy, I wasn’t interested in wearing it ever again.

While at uni, I had a job running poker tournaments, and even when I wasn’t working, I was out playing. This is when I really discovered my fascination with costume jewellery. I used to wear earrings a lot at poker, and it was a case of the bigger, the better. Most of them were cheap, since you can usually buy the sets for between $2 and $10, and I still have way too many pairs. I don’t wear any of them as often as they deserve anymore though. I still love them, but being so cheap, they naturally aren’t the best quality and have started to tarnish.

On the note of tarnishing jewellery, come to think of it, most of it has gotten tarnished over time, and really should be taken to be cleaned properly and given the care it deserves. At the very least, the more expensive items should get a trip in to the jewellers, like my watch and a few necklaces and rings.

I used to keep all of my jewellery in a jewellery box that lives on my desk. It has draws down one side, and a hanging section on the other, and plays music when the top is open. I used to love how much it fitted, but as I brought more and more earrings, they collection spread. I tried using hanging jewellery racks shaped like fancily dressed women, but this never completely felt right either. In the end, I decide to make a jewellery rack. The plan was to build it from pieces of wood, and have it free standing, but in the end, I came up with the idea to convert photo frames for the purpose. This was shortly after I met Michael, and I sat on the phone to him on night while pulling the frames apart and screwing in screws. I used 2 A4 frames, and took the glass and backing out, then strung 2 strings across the centre of each frame for earrings, and put cup hooks along the bottom for necklaces, rings and bracelets. This has worked remarkably well for me, and I really like having everything out and on display, although it has a lot on there, and has ended up being a little too small over time. The weight of it once made it come off the wall using the self adhesive hooks, so I ended up clearing out a lot at that point in time. I do really love this solution though, and in the last year or so, I’ve seen a couple of similar things online, and it makes me happy that I made this long before seeing any other versions.

I like rings too, but don’t wear them very often. Silver and dainty, with a coloured stone is the way I like them best. I don’t have very many, but the ones I do have, I tend not to wear often because I don’t like my hands much since I’m a nail biter. I know this is a silly reason not to wear them, and that it’s a bad habit and I should stop, but it just doesn’t happen for me. I’ll get there one day!

My favourite ring that I own is from Italy. I brought it when me and Michael were there in 2010. I thought not only did it look amazing, but the story behind them was interesting too. These rings were originally crafted to be wedding rings and they come apart when they’re taken off, so that it would be know if the person had taken the ring off to be unfaithful. I thought it was pretty interesting. It is possible to put them back together though. When we were on out contiki tour, our tour guide showed us how it was done. A few of us brought the rings, and I was the first person to figure out how to do it, after puzzling over it for a whole afternoon while in Italy. It frustrated me, and I wanted to leave it, but I was determined. In the end, I could put it together faster than our tour guide, and more easily than anyone else. I also figured out how to do Michael’s 6 banded one, and no one else even came close with that one!

When buying the rings, I also brought a nomination bracelet. These had me fascinated years ago when Aaron and Dave used to come to poker and I noticed them. These bracelets come in individual links, and you can get lots of things on the links. They include flags, letters, gems, images, etc. I fell in love with the idea of getting a flag for each country I visited, so this is what I did. I think I’m missing one still though, but I’ll possibly end up ordering it online. It worked out pricey though. I imagine it’s no worse than charm bracelets or Pandora beads, but since I brought it in one hit, it did hurt a little! All up I think I spent about $320 buying the 2 puzzle rings and the nomination bracelet, but to this day, I still think they’re worth it. The bracelet is the most expensive item of jewellery I own!

I never really had a charm bracelet growing up, except for one that Mum brought me as a baby. A few years ago, Mum gave me one of hers that has a heap of charms on it. She likes the idea of buying more to add to it over time as well. It’s pretty well packed though, and I still have more charms to add to it. I think I’ll wait till I get them all together and take them all in together. It’s weird to me that I love nomination bracelets and like charm bracelets as well, but have no interest in Pandora and don’t like the bracelets all that much. Some of the charms look nice, but I’ve never been interested in getting one at all.

Even though me and Michael have been together for almost 3 years, he’s never brought me any jewellery in that time. I guess he knows me well enough to know that I don’t wear it all that often, but after all this time together, and knowing he’s the right guy for me, there is one item I do want him to get me. He’s known from the start that I wanted to get married at some stage in my life, but I only told him about a month ago that I want him to ask me. He hasn’t said much about it since, so I don’t know if it’s on the cards for now, but I’m happy to wait a bit longer. I just hope I get to pick my own ring!
